Will Google penalise AI-written content? A 2026 update

Google has been clear about what counts. The teams losing rankings are not losing them because they used AI.

We get asked this question more than any other in our content engine work. The short version: Google does not penalise AI-written content as a category. They penalise low-effort content, regardless of who or what wrote it. The teams hand-wringing about AI risk are usually missing the bigger picture about what made their content rank in the first place.

What Google actually said

Google's public stance, repeated through 2024, 2025, and into 2026, is that the policy is about quality, not provenance. Their helpful content updates are designed to identify pages written for search engines rather than people, with low original insight, and structured to maximise ad inventory or affiliate revenue. AI is one way to produce that kind of content quickly. It is not the cause of the policy.

What is actually losing rankings

Pages that lose rankings tend to share a profile: thin content, no original data or expertise, formulaic structure, missing entity coverage, and a page experience that signals the content was written for search. Many of these were written by humans years ago and only got caught up in algorithm updates as the bar rose.

What works in 2026

Content that ranks today does some combination of original research, hard-to-replicate first-party data, deep entity and topic coverage, real expertise from named authors, structured data done well, and a page experience that respects the reader. AI can help with all of those. AI cannot replace the underlying inputs.

Our practical position

We use AI extensively in content engines we build. We use it for ideation, drafting, fact-checking, internal linking, and structured data generation. We do not use it as a substitute for first-party data, expertise, or editorial standards. The result is content that compounds organic traffic for the same reason any good content does: it is genuinely useful, well-researched, and findable.
